Sneads Ferry is a small, thriving community of commercial and sporting
fishermen. It is located on the south shore of the New River, across from The
Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base. According to local folklore, Sneads Ferry
dates back to the days of the Hill Plantation. Hill purchased the plantation from
the original owner, who received it through a grant from the King of England.
Several men from Down East came to the area to fish the local waters. Among them
were Fulchers, Piners and the Lewis'. They purchased land parcels from the plantation
owners and built homes. They farmed and worked the river for their livelihood.
The area was known as The Lower Ferry. The name Sneads Ferry was established at
a later date. Sneads Ferry, home of the Sneads Ferry Sneakers and Annual
